Traditionally most people in villages would have their names or images of their favourite gods tattooed on their forearm or even the ‘tikka’ tattooed on their forehead. Nowadays, tattoos have become a fashion statement among young and old alike. The art of tattooing has also become a promising career for many across the world.
Sometimes the tattoo may be poorly places or the site may have become infected or the desire to have a tattoo on your body may have dissipated. In that case, there is a need for removing the tattoo. Tattoos are etched deeply into the skin and traditional methods of tattoo removal included dermabrasion and the use of chemicals which were painful and caused immense scarring.

At Karishma Laser & Cosmetic Clinic modern technology has brought the best lasers that are gentler on the skin and effectively help remove the tattoo with the least scarring. These lasers have different wavelengths and pulse durations and different laser beams are absorbed by specific colours. The laser is used to selectively target and destroy the tattoo without damaging the surrounding tissue. All effort is made to ensure that the skin is more uniform and looks natural after treatment, though some changes in skin texture is unavoidable.

What is the actual procedure?

The doctor will cleanse the area on and around the tattoo to remove oils on the skin. A rapid laser beam is sent on the area and the patient feels intense emission of light penetrating the skin. The light is absorbed by the tattoo and it breaks down the pigment in the tattoo allowing the body’s natural defence mechanism to gently and progressively remove the tattoo particles. Each laser treatment takes between 10 and 20 minutes. The number of sessions will depend on the depth and colour of the tattoo. Most tattoo removals need 8-10 sessions and these sessions are performed at intervals of 4 weeks.

What can I expect after the treatment?

The treatment is almost painless and involves only a slight stinging sensation. The area treated may be red for several weeks. There may be some amount of bruising and if the tattoo is very deep, bleeding may also occur. Exposure to sun should be avoided to ensure faster healing. Older tattoos are easier to remove than newer ones. Fluorescent colours used in tattoos are least responsive to treatment. With modern lasers, scarring is rare although the skin undergoes changes in texture and colour. The area treated may become hardened or rough. Laser treatment is the most effective method to remove tattoos or any pigment from the skin.
